PREFACE

This work provides the reader with a brief introduc
tion, Greek text, and English translation of the fascinating though difficult document known as the Mithras Liturgy.

I initially prepared an introduction and translation of the Mithras Liturgy for a seminar on the Hellenistic mys tery religions; the seminar was convened by Dr. Hans Dieter Betz during the fall semester of 1975 at Claremont Graduate School. My thanks to the participants in the seminar for their helpful comments.
